How Long Does A Kitchen Renovation Take?

If you are planning a kitchen renovation in the near future, you are likely wondering how long it will take. Along with cost, it’s one of the most common questions that homeowners ask us.

Whether you want to know how long you’ll need to survive without a fully-functioning kitchen, or mentally prepare yourself for what’s to come, here is a realistic schedule that you can expect when signing on for a complete kitchen renovation.

We’ve broken the timeline down into three essential phases:

Phase 1: Design

Timeframe – 2 to 4 Weeks

Every great kitchen renovation starts with a well-thought-out design. In fact, the design process is one of the most critical steps in any remodel. There any many factors to consider and it can be an overwhelming task when tackled alone – but, that’s where a professional designer can help.

By working together with you, our designer will complete a needs assessment to better understand your end goals for your kitchen renovation, as it relates to the design. This will include talking about your likes and dislikes, needs and desires, and any ideas that you may have.

From there, we will present you with up to three concepts for your kitchen project, complete with floor plans, elevations and 3D renderings to help you in your decision.

During this phase, design revisions will also be suggested and completed, and a final kitchen design plan will be selected. This is the exciting part of the process when your vision starts to become a reality!

Phase 2: Pre-construction

Timeframe – 4 Weeks

The pre-construction phase is very important because it sets the tone for the actual construction portion of your kitchen renovation. In this phase, which takes approximately four weeks, we will prepare working drawings, apply for building permits (if permits are required) and finalize the budget for your project.

As the homeowner, it’s also the fun part when you get to go shopping for your kitchen materials. Whether you visit a design centre or individual supplier showrooms, this is your chance to touch, see and experience a range of countertops, flooring, tile and other fixtures. This is also the time when your kitchen cabinetry is ordered, which typically requires four weeks prior to construction to complete.

Phase 3: Construction

Timeframe – 6 to 10 weeks

The third and final phase is the construction phase – the phase when demolition begins and the sawdust flies. Depending on the scope, size and complexity of your kitchen renovation, the timing of this phase will differ. A simple, straightforward remodel can take approximately six weeks to complete, while a complex kitchen transformation can take up to ten weeks or even more.

As a homeowner, this is the light at the end of the tunnel – the time in your project where you will notice the most change. You’ll get to witness your space take shape as the HVAC, plumbing and electrical are completed and your insulation and drywall are installed. Flooring, cabinetry and countertops will follow, and the installation of your backsplash tile, plumbing fixtures, paint and trim will make your kitchen feel almost complete. Once your electrical fixtures and appliances are in, the checkered flag will be waved and the good times in your newly renovated kitchen can begin.

So, how long does a kitchen renovation take? From concept to completion, you should budget yourself three to four months for your kitchen remodel, depending on the overall scope of your project. It’s a considerable investment in terms of time and disruption to your daily life; however, it’s a worthwhile one that not only increases the value and functionality of your home, but also the enjoyment factor.
