Caledon is a mainly rural community, located north west of Toronto, and is part of the Greater Toronto Area. It has two urban centers, Bolton and Southfields Village, and many villages, including Palgrave, Caledon East, Mono Mills, Caledon Village, Alton, Belfountain, Cheltenham, Inglewood and Terra Cotta.

Caledon is a desirable place to live, with rolling hills, many outdoor activities, good schools, and a community that has been twice in recent years named the Safest Community in Canada.

Caledon has many natural features, and environmental protection is a big part of many Caledon design build projects. Many of the areas are under the jurisdiction of environmental agencies. These include:
- Niagara Escarpment Commission regulates the land on the hills to the north of Caledon East, and to the west, into the Forks-of-the-Credit area, and continuing south-west towards Terra Cotta
- Toronto Region Conservation Authority regulates the Humber River and Etobicoke Creek watersheds on the south and east sides of the town
- Credit Valley Conservation Authority regulates the Credit River watershed on the west side of the town
- Oak Ridges Moraine protection covers most of the area east of Airport Road, and north of Castlederg Sideroad, as well as some of the lands along Old Base Line Road.

Rural properties often have only hydro service, so the design and cost of a well, septic system, and heating fuel source must be considered during the design and budgeting process.

It does have it’s unique challenges, such as the need to assess and potentially upgrade the septic system – something most homeowner don’t think of when they start considering building a home addition.
